Was watching No Reservations and Bourdain visited a spot for Hainanese Chicken. Basically its chicken boiled in chicken broth, served with rice also cooked in chicken broth. A few days later this spot opens up down the street from the crib. Coincidence or destiny? Just encase it was the later we decided to check it out.
First they brought out the side dishes. Sauteed bean sprouts topped with roasted garlic (top). Spring roll in a shot glass shape (bottom). Nothing spectacular, but decent filler and some much needed vegetation to go with the meal.
And the chicken. Not as dry as boiling chicken at home, I assume that comes from boiling it in the same oily stock used throughout the day. Not as much flavor on its own, so the soy based sauce its served on adds some needed saltiness. Also the sauces (pictured below) provide a lot of flavor. The yellow sauce is ginger and oil, and the red sauce is a spicy chilli sauce which was pretty spicy by PI standards.
I expected more flavor from the chicken rice. The place is called "Chicken Rice Shop" so I wanted the chicken rice to be on point. Considering I almost never eat rice I was hoping this would be a game changer, it wasn't. The soup was nice, had more of a duck flavor than chicken, I ended up pouring a majority of it over my rice to make up for its blandness.
Overall Chicken Rice Shop wasn't bad. Both meals were around 200php each and came with iced tea. I wouldn't go there regularly because, well, I don't eat rice. That being said, boiled chicken is one of the more healthy ways to get some protein so I may stumble in there one day again.
